"The People of Colorado Are Demanding Accountability: Seligman Calls for Special Session to impeach or censure gov polis after peters commutation
Denver, CO – Following Governor Polis’ announcement that he was commuting the prison sentence of prominent election denier Tina Peters last Friday, David Seligman was the first candidate in the Attorney General’s race to call on the General Assembly to exercise its constitutional authority to reconvene and hold the Governor accountable for the corrupt use of the his clemency authority.
In his statement Sunday, Seligman pointed out that the Governor’s announcement came after the legislative session had already concluded, what Seligman called a “likely effort to avoid accountability for misconduct.” But people across Colorado are demanding accountability.
Peters was convicted in October 2024 of seven felonies related to her attempts in 2021 to prove that the 2020 general election was “stolen” while she was Mesa County Clerk and Recorder, a direct result of President Trump’s conspiracies and fearmongering. The failed, illegal effort cost Mesa County over $1.4 million in replacement equipment, increased security from local law enforcement, and hiring a designated election official to replace Peters.
Since the start of his second term, Trump has repeatedly pressured the governor to release Peters, illegally attempting to grant her a federal pardon in his capacity as President, threatening state officials, moving Space Command out of Colorado and revoking federal funding from other state projects — including from a critical southern Colorado water pipeline for rural ranchers and the National Center for Atmospheric Research facility in Boulder.
Earlier this year, every Democrat in the General Assembly signed a letter urging Polis not to pardon Peters. Since Friday nearly every statewide elected Democrat elected has voiced their incredible disappointment for the Governor’s action.

I’m calling on the General Assembly of Colorado to vote to reconvene for a special session for the purpose of impeaching or censuring the Governor of Colorado. The Governor commuted Tina Peters’ sentence after the legislative session, likely in an effort to avoid accountability for misconduct. The people of Colorado are demanding accountability.
