Seligman and Team Win SCOTUS Court Case on ICE

CO AG Candidate David Seligman: “This is what holding ICE accountable actually looks like.”

DENVER, CO - As the result of a decades-long fight led by Colorado Attorney General candidate David Seligman, the United States Supreme Court yesterday delivered a massive victory for the effort to hold ICE accountable. The case, GEO Group, Inc. v. Menocal — which may be the largest human trafficking class action in United States history — clears the path for ICE and the private industrial complex profiting off immigration detention to be held accountable when they violate our rights.

"A lot of politicians are out there talking about holding ICE accountable,” said David Seligman. “But this is what it actually looks like — years of fighting on behalf of courageous clients, alongside the movement to protect immigrants. This is what bold and courageous lawyering looks like. It's what I've been doing my entire career, and it's what I'm going to keep doing as attorney general."

Seligman led this first-in-the-nation case under the federal law prohibiting human trafficking and forced labor with his team, which includes Towards Justice, where he serves as Executive Director.

GEO Group makes billions running immigration detention facilities for ICE. At their Aurora facility, they forced detainees to clean and maintain the facility under threat of solitary confinement. Many had never committed a crime — and GEO pocketed the profits. GEO spent years doing what powerful corporations always do: delay, maneuver, and claim they were above the law — arguing that a government contract meant the rules didn't apply to them.

David Seligman is one of the country’s leading workers’ rights, consumer rights, and antimonopoly lawyers. He is the Executive Director of Towards Justice, a nationally recognized non-profit legal and labor rights organization based in Denver. He fights for regular people in courts across the country, including the U.S. Supreme Court. He helps working Coloradans and small businesses take on powerful corporations and the Trump Administration—and he’s won. He stands up for nurses, rideshare drivers, meatpackers, Amazon workers, veterans, teachers, federal employees, grocery workers, renters buried in junk fees to the biggest landlords in the country, and working families drowning in medical debt to massive hospital systems. He has returned more than 70 million dollars to working people and forced powerful corporations to play by the rules in Colorado and across the country.

Prior to his work at Towards Justice, David was an attorney at the National Consumer Law Center, where he helped consumers buried in debt and forced to give up their rights in the fine print. David lives in east Denver with his wife and three daughters, just a few miles from where he grew up. He is a graduate of Harvard Law School and served as the Supreme Court Chair of the Harvard Law Review before clerking for appellate and trial level federal judges.
